Longitudinal research of post-competitive blood lactate concentration

(Längsschnittforschung zur Blutlaktatkonzentration nach dem Wettkampf)

It was reported that swimming post-competitive blood lactate concentration increased gradually as the results of champions in some important games improved in several years. For the subjects of previous studies were different, the purpose of the current investigation was to study the change of swimming post-competitive blood lactate in the same athletes after several years' training. The longitudinal comparisons among post-competition blood lactate values of 28 swimmers (13 male and 15 female) were performed in 5 Chinese National Championships in 3 years. A certain swimmer took part in 5 competitions in the same style of the same distance. Performance and blood lactate values in different swimming styles in same distance were statistically analysed within one group. Blood samples (20ul) were taken from the fingertips of swimmers at 5th and 8th minute after the competition of 50 to 1500 meters and the highest value was recorded. The analysis was made with an automatic lactate analyzer of the YSI Company, model 23L, which employs electroenzymatic method of analysis. Results showed that swimming performance in 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m improved gradually in 5 competitions at the same time blood lactate concentration decreased gradually. To compare the last competition with the first competition, the performance of 50m improved significantly (0.58 ± 0.28 second) as post-competitive blood lactate decreased significantly (1.06 ± 0.8 mM/L), the increasing value of result in 100m event was 1.69 ± 0.99 second (p<0.01) and the mean decreasing value of blood lactate was 1.75 ± 1.29 mM/L (p<0.01), the increasing value of result in 200m event was 2.71 ± 1.37 second (p<0.01) and the mean decreasing value of blood lactate was 1.64 ± 1.06 mM/L (p<0.01), the change value in 400m event was 9.02 ± 2.91 second (p<0.01) and 1.53 ± 0.93 mM/L (p<0.05)( result and blood lactate respectively). The comparison was also made among post-competitive blood lactate concentrations of different swimming distances and different swimming styles. The highest mean lactate value of free style was recorded in 200m (14.41 ± 1.28 mM/L) and 100m (14.16 ± 1.14mM/L), the secondly high mean lactate value was recorded in 400m, and the lowest lactate value was recorded in 800m and 1500m. Results showed that the highest lactate value in different styles was recorded in backstroke and the lowest was recorded in breast.
