Effects of environmental conditions on competitive swimming performance

(Auswirkungen von Umweltfaktoren auf die Wettkampfleistung im Schwimmen)

The role of ergonomics in sport is complex: not only do we strive to enhance the comfort and safety of the competing individual, but the approach of ergonomics is also to understand the relationship one has with the task they are trying to perform, while at the same time acknowledging the equipment and environment with which they work (Reilly, 2010). Whether working in a scientific or leisure setting, closer examination into the environmental factors affecting injury and performance may lead the reader to reconsider the prescription of swimming by making small, albeit important environmental changes in the equipment used, practice techniques employed, or even to the swimming pool itself.
