The 3rd International Conference on Medicine & Tennis
(Dritte internationale Konferenz für Medizin und Tennis)
Almost 450 physicians gathered in Paris on 20 May 1999 for the 3rd International Conference on Medicine and Tennis. The meeting, hosted by the French Tennis federation, was held in conjunction with the French Open.
The traumatology sessions covered four different subjects: the shoulder of the ageing tennis player, muscle pathology, muscle strength of the upper limb in the professional tennis player and ankle injuries.
A separate session, chaired by Prof. Poortmans from Belgium and Dr. Babette Pluim of the Royal Netherlands Lawn Tennis Association, was dedicated to the heart and racket sports. The cardiac stress generated by tennis was compared with that for squash, table tennis, badminton and pelote.
There were three round table sessions. The first dealt with the incidence of cardiovascular risk factors in athletes, including high blood pressure, diabetes, tobacco, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. In the second session, chaired by Dr. Rowland from the US and Dr. Paruit, President of the Medical Commission of the French Tennis Federation, stress in the competitive child was discussed. The third session covered nutritional aspects of the game of tennis.
