Head injuries and emergencies in sports
Head injuries represent an important injury designation, for which sports medicine providers should be prepared to recognize, manage, and appropriately triage.
Concussions represent a form of mild traumatic brain injury, with both physiologic and short-term clinical impacts, and require careful management before return to play.
On-field evaluation of head injuries requires a stepwise process for evaluating airway, breathing, circulation, disability, and trauma (ABCDE).
Standardized evaluation tools for concussion are important in assessing readiness for return to play.
