Relationship between match playing performance and muscular strength and power in professional rugby league

Identifying the strength and power characteristics that are related to positive match playing performance during rugby league match play will allow physical performance staff to focus on developing these attributes during resistance training sessions. Positive tackle outcomes are central to match success in contact sports, such as rugby league. A player`s ability to evade tacklers, advance following contact, break a tackle, and play the ball quickly is necessary to gain an advantage when attacking. Conversely, the ability to effectively stop the opposition progressing down the field by dominating a tackle contest and therefore conceding less metres is critical during defence. Muscular strength and power are required to push, pull and absorb forces during physical collisions. The aim of this study was to determine if muscular strength and power qualities are related to match playing performance in professional rugby league.
