Differential impact of mental preparation, cognitive disturbance and temporal dimension on a strength task among weightlifters

The present study examined the impact of mental preparation on a strength task. Participants (n=8, mean age=21.75 years, SD = 2.18) were recruited from elite athletes of Malaysian weightling team. Differential conditions included (1) with cognitive distraction (wi_cd), (2) with mental preparation controlled time (wi_mpC), (3) with mental preparation voluntary time (wi_mp V).The dependant measure was the grip strength measured using Grip D (TKK 5101).Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to analyze the impact on a strength task. Results indicated that strength was increased in both the mental preparation condition (wi-mp C and wi-mp V). No significant effects were observed in the temporal dimension of mental preparation between controlled preparatory time and voluntary preparatory time. The present result indicate positive impact of mental preparation on a strength task. Qualitative analysis of the introspective report revealed "common" strategies and "unique" strategies used by the athletes for mental preparation.
