Changes of isokinetic profile on rowers` quadriceps and hamstrings after one year of training

(Veränderungen des isokinetischen Profils der quadriceps und ischiokruralen Muskulatur nach einem Jahr Training bei Ruderern)

To evaluate the rowing training induced changes in strength and endurance of quadriceps and hamstrings, 14 male rowing athletes who would be the participants of the 8th National Game underwent isokinetic tests on a Cybex 2000 system before and after a yearly training program. During the tests, each subject performed concentric isokinetic knee extension and flexion at 3 angular velocities: 600/sec, 1800/sec and 3000/sec. The values of peak torque (PT), total work (TW), and ratio of peak torque of hamstrings and quadriceps (H/Q) were computed and recorded. The endurance ratio (ER) was obtained from work done in the last five repetitions in comparison with that done in the first five among a total of 25 consecutive repetitions of knee movement at 180/sec. The results showed that after a years training, the PT, TW (at three angular velocities) and ER of quadriceps was increased significantly. The TW at three angular velocities of hamstrings was increased, too. However, PT and ER of hamstrings were not significant changes. It indicated that rowing training could improve the strength and endurance of quadriceps more than that of hamstrings. Meanwhile, the results suggest that TW may be a more sensitive index in demonstrating muscle function than PT. It was also found that H/Q was decreased significantly after a years training and we could concluded that the value of H/Q variable was due to athletes` different training years.
