Numerical simulation on the channel current of a 90 deg. groin in slalom kayaking
(Numerische Simulation der Kanalströmung einer 90°-Kurve im Kajakslalom)
Introduction:
This study, used one aspect to study the characteristic of the current of Slalom Kayaking over the whole channel. By the numerical simulation on the height and the velocity of the current field, the investigators hypothesized that it could provide guidance to the training and the channels designation. Methods
In this paper, the 900 groin has been investigated as part of the competition field of the 10th National Games in Nanjing. For some specific data, the length of the calculation area was 90m, with a 10m breadth at the bottom, and a height of 1.8m.. At the back, the ratio of the slope was 3:2. In addition, the bottom was flat and the location of the groin is in X=30m from the entrance direction. The flow was 12 m/s and the average depth 0.7m. Using the business software Fluent, which the boundary conditions and parameter settings is referred to in the reference "Research on The Key Techniques for Simulating Viscous Flow with Free Surface".
Results/ Discussion
With respect to height and velocity around the groin the highest water level was in the front near the groin. Because of the blocking effect of the groin, a backwater area was formed, the water level of which was obviously higher than that of the main navigable channel. Otherwise, the lowest water level was behind and near the top of the groin where it is submerged, and the specific distance was 1-2m behind the groin. The lower reaches of the submerged groin have jumped in the water and hydraulic jump is the lowest water level formed a "hole". The maximum horizontal velocity was behind the groin without blocking. However, there was negative velocity which reflects that there had being the reverse flow in this area, and the magnitude was approximate to the velocity of the upper reaches.
Conclusions
Combining the theory of the computation and the reality situation of the groin, athletes should pay more attention to variation in height and the current. Athletes should take full advantage to gain increased acceleration and avoid a long distance reverse flow behind the groin. It is not an arbitrary decision with respect to the placement of the groin and should be included in the computation. The present findings are preliminary and further study will endeavour to complete this work independently.
