Characterization of football injuries: A retrospective study with athletes from a Brazilian championship

Background Football players, due to the characteristics of sports activity, are constantly exposed to the occurrence of musculoskeletal injuries. This study aimed to describe the profile in professional athletes from Alagoas, Brazil, participants in the Alagoas` First Division Championship of 2020. Methods An observational and retrospective study was carried out involving 65 athletes from five clubs participating in the championship. The analyzed variables were prevalence of injury, age, occasion, mechanism, type of injury, severity, field position and injury site. Then, a descriptive data analysis was carried out. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Alagoas under C.A.A.E. no 29788320.2.0000.5013. Results The prevalence of players with injuries was 87.6% (n = 57) and the total number of injuries reported was 112. Injuries during training were the most frequent (49.1%; n = 55). The main mechanism was the indirect (67.8%; n = 76). The most frequent type was of joint/ligament (48.2%; n = 54). The anatomical site most frequently affected was the thigh (30.4%; n = 34). And, due to the time off, the most common severity found among the injuries was the severe (50.9%; n = 57). There was a high prevalence of sports injuries, more frequently characterized by joint/ligament injuries and severe injuries. Conclusions More research is needed to corroborate our results, however, the data obtained will certainly help to reduce the number and severity of injuries in the future, in addition to adding to the collection of knowledge in this regard in Brazilian football.
