Resting C-reactive protein levels in male and female athletes

(Ruhewerte des C-reaktiven Proteins bei männlichen und weiblichen Sportlern)

Aim. C-reactive protein (CRP) is one of the acute phase proteins that release from the liver as a result of many factors like tissue damages and exercise. The aim of the present study was to examine the resting CRP levels in male and female athletes who had participate in different types of sports. Methods. Forty-two athletes, 18-29 year-old, who had engaged in three types of sports (Soccer, Swimming and Karate) participate in this study. Height and weight were measured, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Fasting blood sample was obtained to determine the CRP levels. Results. The lowest CRP values were observed in swimmers (P<0.05), while no significant differences were observed between soccer and karate groups. On the other hand, the CRP values in female athletes were higher than in male athletes in all of the groups (P<0.05). Conclusion. It seems that types of sport are effective on CRP levels and female athletes had higher levels of CRP than males.
