The effects of pointe shoes on ballet dancers` biomechanics, muscle activity, movement, and symptoms: A scoping review

Key Points • Studies examining the effect of pointe shoes on ballet dancers are heterogenous in their research aims, outcome measures and methods • Significant knowledge gaps exist regarding functional and performance-based outcomes, injury outcomes including exploration of factors such as shoe age/usage, and pointe shoe treatment factors (eg, breaking in procedures and padding) • Ecological validity needs to be considered, with many studies employing methods that do not reflect ballet-specific demands or environments (eg, not assessing dancers` own shoes)
