Figure Skating Laboratory at University of Delaware
With a grant from the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) and a generous equiptment donation by the Motion Analysis Coorporation, the Figure Skating Labratory was constructed in the Gold Ice Arena, one of the two ice surfaces on campass. Figure skaters' motion is captured through the use of a six camera Motion Analysis Motion Capture System. Cameras are supported above the ice by a circular steal beam allowing optimal vantage points for data collection.
Software, StakeTrak 1.0, has been developed by inhouse staff to calculate key variables of interest. The communication gap between Biomechanist to coach and athlete has been a continual problem in all sports. Through the use of computer animation, an attempt to bridge this gap is possible. Data collected from a skater's jump can now be illustrated within seconds after the jump has been completed. Through computer animation skaters can visually see the jump they had previously completed. This may prove to be an invaluable tool due to its ability to provide immediate feedback.
