Three-dimensional biomechanical analysis of the hockey drag flick performed in competition
(Biomechanische Analyse des gezogenen Schlenzens in Hockey-Wettkampfspielen)
The study purpose was to provide a three-dimensional (3D) descriptive analysis of the pen-alty corner drag flick performed in competition. The study is of importance since approxi-mately half of the goals scored in field hockey are from a penalty corner set play with the drag flick resulting in a considerably greater likelihood of success in scoring than a shottaken with a direct hit. Three cameras were used to Video record at 50 Hz the penalty corners for all games performed during the lOth Men's Hockey World Cup held in Kuala Lumpur in 2002. The video of the drag flicks by five drag flickers from four teams were subsequently digitized using the APAS System. The DLT algorithm was used to produce 3D measures of kinematic and temporal variables describing the performance of the drag flick. The technique for the penalty corner drag flick used by the elite level drag flickers was consistent with the skill de-scribed in the coaching texts. Four of the five drag flickers placed the right foot well forward of the ball slightly before stick/ball contact. One player consistently contacted the ball well before foot placement. Counter-rotation of shoulders relative to the hips äs a "wind-up" to the flick was the norm with the hip rotation leading the shoulder rotation during the flick. Not all drag flickers adopted a long ball drag and a low body position. On the limited data available from this study, there appears to be two distinct drag flick styles.
