Coaching elite athletes with physical disability: The views of coaches and senior administrators in Australia

(Sportler mit körperlicher Behinderung coachen. Die Meinung von Trainern und Hauptverantwortlichen in Organisationen in Australien)

Sport for athletes with disability is increasing in both professionalism and popularity, yet the stigma, exclusion and physical barriers frequently experienced by persons with impairment has been anecdotally reported to be correspondingly prevalent in the sporting community. Given the identified importance of coaches to the development, training and success of athletes, it is critical that suitably trained and qualified coaches are appointed and supported to coach these athletes to their fullest potential, yet many people working within the para-sport environment report that recruiting sufficient quality coaches is problematic. Although there has been a substantial volume of research undertaken into the associated topics of para-sport, coaching, and training and professional development, there is a lack of research which specifically examines these factors in terms of the experience of coaching elite athletes with disability.
