Monitoring and evaluating the intensity of high strength training in basketball players

(Aufzeichnung und Auswertung der Intensität von Krafttraining von Basketballspielern)

Basketball`s intensity is difficult to determine because of the changeability and diversity during competition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of some parameters of high strength training in 15 basketball players (including step moving, passing, catching and shooting, exchange of attacking and defending, shooting while moving etc.). Blood samples were taken before exercise, 1min, 4min, 7min, 10min, 13min, 16min, 19min, 22min and 25min after exercise. Blood ammonia and lactate were determined by an ammonia autoanalyzer (Model AA-4120 Japan) and a lactate autoanalyzer (YSI 1500 SPORT American) respectively. Heart rate was recorded before and immediately after exercise. The major findings were 1) Blood ammonia increased significantly after exercise until 19min after exercise (P<0.05-0.01). 2) The peak ammonia concentration appeared at 7-13min after exercise, this value was lower than that of track athletes running 400m at full speed, but there was no statistical significance (P>0.05). 3) Recovery time for ammonia was between 22 and 25min after exercise. 4) Blood lactate concentration was increased by exercise until 16min after exercise. 5) Lactate concentration peaked at 4-7min after exercise and began to recover at 19-25min after exercise. The lactate peak was lower than that of 400m running in track athletes. 6) Heart rate was more than 180 beats/min. These results show that intensity of high strength training in basketball was similar to or lower than that of 400m running at full speed. Blood ammonia and lactate may be used as independent parameters to monitor and evaluate exercise intensity.
