Veloergometry load effect on low frequency fatigue in M. quadriceps femoris of basketball players
(Fahrradergometer-Belastungswirkung auf die niedrigfrequente Ermüdung des M. Quadrizeps Femoris bei Basketballspielern)
The aim of the study was to test if veloergometry of intensity at maximal oxygen consumption induces low frequency fatigue in m. quadriceps femoris of basketball players.
Methods:
12 basketball players at the age of 19-25 years participated in the experiment. Methods of electrostimulation and dynamometry were used to evaluate contractile properties of quadriceps femoris muscle. 1-s trains of the stimuli at the frequency of 1, 10, 15, 20 and 50 Hz were delivered transcutaneously in addition to jump test and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) test before and 3 min. after veloergometry of intensity at maximal oxygen consumption. In both periods, muscle potentiating capacities were evaluated by applying 10 Hz stimuli train immediatelly after 5-s MVC.
Results:
The results showed the remarkable decrease in stimulation forces, MVC and jump height. However, the decrease in low frequency forces was more profound as compared to 50 Hz contraction force and MVC. This indicates the appearance of LFF. In conclusion, veloergometry of intensity at maximal oxygen consumption induces low frequency fatigue in m. quadriceps femoris of basketball players.
