Improving cycling performance with large sprockets

This paper studies the effect of sprocket size on the performance of the chain drive system for racing bicycles in flat race cycling. Analysis shows that very small sprocket sizes leads to relatively poor overall performance of the chain drive system due to very large forces in the chain and the resulting sliding friction forces at the chain links. Experimental tests on chain efficiency confirm that optimum chain performance is achieved by maximising sprocket size.
